Missouri Compromise

Missouri compromise was passed into law in the early years of the 19^th century. This was done in a bid to reduce slavery; it was majorly to help in reducing slavery among states and to divide the slavery and non-slavery states from each other. At the time, slavery was a rampant activity, and in many states, it was a regular thing. However, not all states were happy with slavery, and some opted to be divided since there was no better way to help the situation. Henry Clay wrote the Missouri compromise, those who were against and those who supported slavery agreed to it. The agreement was put in place to forbid slavery in Louisiana and many states north of the United States of America; it was only allowed to be carried out in Missouri, which was proposed to be a state. However, the Missouri compromise came with some advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of Missouri compromise

           One advantage of the Missouri compromise is that it stopped the civil war for a while. For many years before the agreement was reached, people were divided on the slavery issue. Citizens, especially from the Louisiana state, were regularly into wars with citizens from Missouri state, hence, dividing the states into slavery and non-slavery states reduced the civil war though was not guaranteed. Each side felt that there they got something useful from the compromise, and as such, Henry Clay was seen as a hero.

           The Missouri compromise also played a huge role towards the ban of slavery and slave trade; though it was not a one night journey, the agreement was a proof that at some point in time, the war on slavery was started; hence, spearheaded the call to ban slavery and slave trade in the world that was rampant in the 19th century.

Disadvantages of the Missouri compromise

           Although the Missouri compromise was put in place to prevent civil wars, it, however, did not last to fulfil this aim, thirty years after the Missouri compromise was put into law; it found its way into the hands of legislators again. It found itself in the form of Kansas and Nebraska, the Missouri compromise was considered unconstitutional, and as such, civil wars broke between those who supported slavery and those who were against slavery.

           Another disadvantage of the Missouri compromise is that it brought instability in the government; years after it was put into law, the government always found itself on the spot on how it rules over its citizens. However, the country was divided into slavery and non-slavery states; this is because people felt that human rights in Missouri state was being abused because of slavery since there was no federal regulations that governed Missouri state, at the same time, the government was under pressure from other states that wanted slavery legalized.

           As much as the Missouri compromise was meant to divide the country into slavery and non-slavery states, it, however, brought divisions among the citizens that have lasted for years even after the war against slavery was long won. Some states that supported slavery are still discriminated of the choices they made. Even though the government and the whole world has stood against slavery and slave trade, the states that supported slavery during the Missouri compromise are still practising slavery, whereby today, children and even adults are still abducted and sold in such states as workers. The Missouri compromise also gave rise to racial discrimination that was also a significant pandemic that contributed to civil wars, since slaves were racially discriminated based on their skin colour. The Missouri compromise also gave rise to economic discrimination; this is because the slaves were regarded as people of low income who fed on hand to mouth and were never capable of being part in the decision making process concerning the states.

           In a democratic world today, compromises such that the one made in Missouri state should be adopted.
