Objectivism.? Rand?s thinking, which values egoism and individualism above altruism and collectivism, is often
cited by members of the right wing, especially when arguing against ?big government? entitlement programs and
in favor of privatization and free-market capitalism. In fact, Paul Ryan, the Republican vice-presidential
nominee once said, ?I grew up reading Ayn Rand, and it taught me quite a bit about who I am and what my value
systems are and what my beliefs are.?

How is the Objectivist philosophy presented in Rand?s novel Anthem and the scenes we watched from the film
version of The Fountainhead a reflection of right-wing ideology? In other words, how do Rand?s protagonists
(Equality 7-2521 and Howard Roark) embody right-wing values and how do the antagonists in her works (?The
Collective,? The World Council of Scholars and Ellsworth Toohey) represent what the right rejects from
left-wing ideology?
OPTION 2:
Despite the right wing?s adulation of her thought, the pro-choice, anti-Reagan atheist Rand was opposed to
several Republican positions during her life. In what ways, is the right wing, in practice (actual policy),
out of sync with and in opposition to Ayn Rand?s Objectivist philosophy as presented in Anthem and the film
version of The Fountainhead. What actual right wing policies would Rand and her protagonists be opposed to and
label as collectivist?
For this essay, you might want to do some independent research on right wing, conservative and left wing,
liberal/progressive politics and ideology. Don?t just focus on this election or on Republicans vs. Democrats.
Look at the histories of these ideologies, particularly the right-wing, as well as its platforms and policies
and discuss how the literature of Ayn Rand reflects or contradicts what many in the right wing believe in. If
you do independent research (and you should), make sure you cite your sources.
