Prompt: “How Do I…?”
This exercise starts on p.21 of The Writer’s Practice. It asks you to write instructions for doing something you’re good at. Follow the step-by-step instructions to produce an edited, polished draft.
Purpose:
The main purpose of this assignment is to get you used to writing for a specific audience. That means thinking about who needs to read what you’re writing, what they need to know, and how you can best communicate it to them.
For example, when I did this assignment, I thought about how often I see photos on Instagram containing basic photographic errors. My audience, then, is people who use their phones to take pictures, are familiar with the popular photo apps and their functions, and are interested in getting slightly better at it. People in my audience know how to use their phones but haven’t given much, or any, thought to the basic principles of photography.
This assignment also lets you show off a bit, and maybe even have some fun.
Tips:
Don’t skip Step 1, where you make a list of things you’re good at. This is what’s called pre-writing, and it will help you choose what to write about. Writing or typing possible topics will help you keep track of your thoughts, and will remind you what you’re doing if you start to zone out.
In Step 5, Warner tells you to “find and analyze models.” By “models,” he means other pieces of writing where someone describes how to do something. You can find these by Googling. If you’re having trouble finding anything, email me for help.
-Step 6 says “revise draft.” This doesn’t have to be a complicated process. One way I like to do it is to rewrite, or re-type, what I’ve already written. As I re-type, I notice awkward word choices and confusing sentences and I correct them. I notice places where I need to add information, and I delete stuff I don’t need.
Warner says you shouldn’t use pictures, but you can use them if you want to.
There’s no length requirement.
If you need inspiration, check out the example I wrote.
