In patient-centered care, it is the utmost priority for the health care providers, such as doctors and nurses, to ensure that patients get quality health care, but at the same time, with the full cooperation of the patients (Darlinghurst, 2011). Therefore, patients are partners with their health care providers, not only from a clinical perspective but also from a physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, and at times financial perspective. However, just like any other profession, there must be challenges faced towards service delivery; discussed below are some of the factors that influence the quality, safe, and patient-centered care.
Technology
According to Robert Wood Johnson, technology has become a vital part of service delivery in many professional fields; the field of medicine is not an exception (Sharma & Kumar, 2018). The right technology has got many advantages both to the patient and the medics. Technology facilitates communication between the practitioners and the patients, hence, reducing miscommunication or errors. Technology also facilitates access to information, therefore, reducing medical errors. Technology increases patient-centered care; this is because it encourages a friendly relationship between medics and patients; thus, clinicians find it easy to offer services to patients; as such, patient satisfaction is achieved.
Communication
Communication is a vital tool in the health profession; thus, setting up proper communication systems with the patients and the clinicians is essential. The ability to explain and listen, impacts relationships with patients and clinicians, thus, influencing personal and institution’s performance (Darlinghurst, 2011). Proper communication with patients and their kin enhances trust with the hospital; this is because the patients feel cared for.
Collaboration
Collaboration in a health care facility is vital, interprofessional collaboration, and the patient to health professionals’ collaboration enhances better and quality service delivery. Interprofessional ration also reduces medical errors, improves patient experience, and deliver outcomes as expected by the patients, thus reducing health care cost. Collaboration also helps the healthcare facility save on financial resources since the proper workflow is achieved.
Shared decision-making
The health care profession entails a lot of decision making. Still, the concern is whether the decisions the health professionals make are shared or just concealed from the patient and their families argued at by Robert Wood Johnson; at times, decisions are made concerning patient’s health and never shared, as such, patients and their families treat such decisions as to medical procedures. Roles of communication and collaboration
Communication, collaboration, and shared decision making as I have discussed on the first question are vital tools towards ensuring that quality services are delivered to patients. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care emphasizes that, communication among clinicians and patients helps to ensure that the services rendered to the patients are as per their will and not forced on them; this, however, must involve sharing decisions with the same patients. Collaboration ensures that both the patients and the clinicians work together effectively; it is vital for people in the health sector to collaborate to ensure that there no disagreements or misunderstandings. Decision making does not only help in solving the financial sector in a health care facility but also ensures that quality patients care, patients are informed and participate in the decision making process, This gives everyone, the patient and the clinicians the opportunity to agree on issues and work collectively as a team.
Communication and collaboration between health care teams, patients, and insurance companies
According to Robert Wood Johnson, communication and collaboration between health care teams aim at enhancing teamwork. Hence, making decisions and working towards fulfilling them is a common goal among them; health care teams are, therefore, able to avoid possible mistakes in their profession, thus, improving their performance and the health facility.
Communication and collaboration between patients and the medical team promote service delivery. Involving the patients in the medical profession also encourages teamwork among patients and medical staff, enhancing effective quality service delivery and focusing on ensuring patient satisfaction; it also improves patients outcomes and reduces medical errors.
Communication and collaboration among the health institution and the health insurance company is essential. It helps the insurance company to monitor the health of their patient while giving the necessary support and care to the patient; this helps in keeping a proper working relationship between the patients and the insurance company they signed for.
