Reaction Paper #1
Please answer the following question(s) thoughtfully and using proper spelling and grammar and complete sentences. This assignment will be due on
Briefly describe the premise of what we have seen of Season 4 of The Wire. Meanwhile, think about how sociologists have argued that the “underclass” is characterized by its geographic concentration, social isolation from the middle class and its joblessness. Use these arguments to describe how the show focuses on poverty, racial discrimination, and institutional collapse and how these socio-economic conditions give rise to criminal activity.
After describing what we have seen in The Wire so far, tell me the following:
1. How do we see the underclass individuals in The Wire characterized by geographic concentration? Where are they physically located? What is the state of their housing? How does it compare to those in the upper classes, like that of Tommy Carcetti, for example?
2. Discuss the poverty of some of the characters on The Wire. How are they isolated from the middle class individuals in Baltimore (this may be combined and related to question 1).
3. What is the job situation portrayed in the show, specifically, of the “corner” people? How does their race and social class play into their chosen occupations? What about those people who are in better occupations, ie: Tommy Carcetti, Mayor Royce, the police officers, the new teacher Roland Prezbylewski?
4. Also, tell me what you think about the show so far.
