Reflection Paper

Images of families are everywhere in media, including in movies and television. As we’ve learned so far from our course readings, what constitutes a family has changed significantly in recent decades, and much of those changes are reflected in the families we watch on screens. Some of these images reflect our personal experience of family and some are very different from what we know and have experienced. For this assignment, you will reflect on how the media depicts families and how that has influenced your viewpoint as it relates to one or more of the following chapters: Chapter 4 (Families and Social Class), Chapter 5 (Gender), and Chapter 6 (Sexuality).

STEP 1: Choose either a television show or movie to do some research from a sociological standpoint. Look for a family that is explored in depth and addresses one of the aforementioned chapter topics. There should be a strong enough depiction of family members and how they interact to be able to explore the assigned sociological concepts.

STEP 2: Choose one theoretical view identified in the chapter(s) of your choice through which to analyze your chosen family (e.g., Theories of Social Class; Perspectives on Gender; and Sociology and Sexuality).

Reflect on how well your family selections that are depicted in the media support a theoretical view of family.  Use your identified families as support or an argument against the theoretical view of family in society. Consider the following questions:

  1. What norms are assumed in this family?
  2. What roles do family members have?
  3. How are the assumptions and points of view in this family understood through your chosen theoretical view?
  4. What argument do these families make about public perceptions of family behavior and structures?
  5. What does this family say about society?

For example, you might decide to write about how the Belcher Family from the animated TV series Bob’s Burgers reflect families in their social class. You can evaluate how the parents socialize their children about their family’s social mobility (or lack thereof).

In your paper, you should also incorporate how the media has impacted your view of the family. You can also compare the family you identified in the television or movie to that of your own family.  For example, you could elaborate if the family depicted in the media resembles your own family or not.

Your reflection should be written in the first person. Your paper should be between 350-500 words in length, not including any quotes or cited references.

The grade for your paper will be heavily based on its quality and how well you reflected on what you learned. As you edit your paper prior to submission, think of the following questions:

  • How well did I incorporate materials I learned from the class materials? Did I cite them appropriately? When citing in my paper, did I refer to the authors instead of the journal/article title?
  • Are my sentences structured and complete? Do I have any run-on sentences?
  • Is my paper organized with a strong introduction, a main body with supported arguments/evidence, and a conclusion that leaves the reader with an interesting final impression?
  • Am I using good transition sentences?
  • Does my paper have a sense of direction? Is my writing logical and my ideas are linked together in a logical sequence?
  • How original is my writing? Is at least 95% of the content in my paper based on my own words?
