Research Proposal Paper

The goal of this Research Proposal paper is to integrate the scientific research methods knowledge you will acquire during this class and produce a capstone project. You will begin by identifying a subject (topic) that is of interest to you. Then you will begin conducting a preliminary literature review to gain more knowledge about your topic of interest. You will need a minimum of six empirical research articles (no review articles) to use as your final sources for this research proposal.

To begin, you will need to define your projects:

Proposed population of interest

Proposed sample of interest and how you would acquire them

Proposed independent variable(s) if you will have them

Proposed dependent variables(s)

Proposed scale of measurement for you dependent variable(s)

Type of research design for your proposal: true experimental design, quasi-experimental design, correlational and/or regression design, two-group non-experimental design, etc.

Once you have several journal articles, you may then formulate your research question(s), research hypothesis(es), and null hypothesis(es).

Once you have the above information, you must send Dr. Bailey an email describing your proposal and gain permission to proceed with your proposal idea (This must occur by the end of Week 3).

The deadline to send you proposal idea to Dr. Bailey is Saturday, November 5. Failure to send a proposal idea by the deadline will result in receiving zero points for the proposal assignment!

Example Email to Dr. Bailey:

[Hi Dr. Bailey,

I plan to write a research proposal paper concerning the relationship between class attendance and final grade for research methods students (PSYC B6).

Variables: Class Attendance Percentage & Final Grade Percentage

Research Design: Correlational Research

Population: All Behavioral Science BC Students

Sample: One Class of PSYC B6 Students

Statistical Test: Pearson’s r

Synopsis: I plan to write a proposal concerning measuring students in a PSYC B6 course for their classroom attendance and their final grade percentage to see if there is a correlation between the two variables.

Please let me know if this is a suitable research proposal idea.]

Your next step is to write your paper

Your final paper must strictly adhere to APA guidelines as published in the seventh edition of the APA Publication Manual. Your paper must be written following the “Professional Paper” guidelines for the APA seventh edition. Do not follow the APA guidelines for the “Student Paper.”

Your final paper will contain the following sections (all in APA 7th edition standards):

Title Page

Abstract (150 – 250 words)

Introduction section (minimum of 3+ complete pages)

Title of Paper

Background:

journal article reference & support (with proper APA citations)

Proposed null hypothesis(es)

Proposed independent variable(s) (if you have one)

proposed: Method section (minimum of 1+ complete page)

Sample: who are you proposing to be the human participants or animal subjects for your proposed study? How will you acquire your sample? What is special about your sample (be specific)?

Instrument: what equipment, measurement tools, or other apparati will you need to obtain if you are to perform your proposed research study?

Design: what are the exact procedures you will need to follow to complete your research study if you are given permission to perform your study? What will the step-by-step process be for your study (with enough detail so that others my recreate your study if they wish)?

proposed: Results section (1 partial page)

If you are given permission to complete your research study, what descriptive statistics would you obtain and what inferential statistical test(s) would you perform?

proposed: Discussion section (minimum of 1+ complete pages)

What potential results would you expect to find if you were to perform your proposed research study?

What would be the implications of the results of your proposed research study if you did find significance?

What would be the limitations of the results of your proposed research study if you did find significance?

What would be the suggestions for future research you would recommend for other researchers if you did find significance after performing your proposed research study?

Provide proper APA references for all sources used in writing your research proposal.

Appendices (if necessary)

Warning: Failure to Complete the Minimum Number of Pages for this Paper will Result in an Immediate 50% Deduction of Possible Points!

The following are important dates for your proposals

Saturday, November 5 – Deadline to submit a proposal paper idea to Dr. Bailey in an email.

Saturday, December 3 – Deadline to submit Research Proposal Paper in Canvas.

Warning II: Papers not received in Canvas by 11:59pm on the due date will receive zero points!

* Note: This is a research proposal. Typically, research projects are written in past tense. However, for a research proposal, you will write in future tense (except for the Introduction).
