SONA Alternative Assignment

The article analyzed in the essay is on ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder’: People who think they are drunk also think they are attractive. The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of alcohol consumption concerning self-perceived attraction. This is a type of correlational research design where the researcher wants to understand the kind of relationship that exists between two naturally occurring variables. The researchers might be seeking to know how two or more variables are related and in what way. In this case study, the researchers want to understand the relationship between alcohol consumption and self-perceived beauty or attraction. They know that most drunk people often think they are more attractive. Also, alcohol consumption influences self-perception, where it reduces self-awareness by inhibiting the encoding process of self-relevance (Begue, Bushman, Zerhouni, Subra, & Ourabah, 2012).

An independent variable is a variable whose change can be determined through a scientific experiment. They are always changed so that the experimenter can test the dependent variable in a study. There is a significant change in the dependent variable whenever there is an alteration of the independent variable. In this case study, the independent variable is the amount of alcohol being consumed. When a person drinks more alcohol, they are expected to lose self-reliance and perceive themselves more attractive than those who have consumed less or no alcohol at all. The dependent variable is the variable that is being measured or tested in scientific research. In this case, the dependent variable is the self-perceived attractiveness that is attributed to drunk people. This means that the variable depends on the amount of alcohol being taken by the person or the test subject.

The study involved 19 customers, 63% male with a mean age of 22.5. The participation was voluntary, where they received a lottery ticket.

The method was intriguing as participants measured their level of attractiveness when drunk. All they were required to do is get drunk, and from there, the experimenters would evaluate their perception of attractiveness, original, bright, or funny they were at the moment. The participants were getting drunk, and from there, they were evaluated by the experimenters. The data was collected in person.

The BAL of the experiment showed that participants considered themselves attractive while drunk. As such, the research was consistent with the hypothesis that most intoxicated people perceive themselves as more attractive than sober people. However, the study cannot conclude that these individuals perceive themselves as attractive in barrooms alone, or there is a third factor that connects being drunk and perceived attractiveness.
