Students are to submit a 5-page research paper.  The paper is to be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins and must properly cite at least five academic sources other than your textbook (please be reminded that Wikipedia, about.com, CNN, the Washington Post, and other websites similar to these are not considered credible academic sources for a research paper).  For assistance on locating academic sources please see the reference librarians. Be sure to include a title page and a reference page.

Select a critical issue or problem currently being debated in corrections (e.g. over population of California prisons, prisoner reentry, capital punishment, the over representation of ethnic minorities in correctional facilities, the prison industrial complex, nurseries in prisons, juveniles charged as adults, etc.).  Students should discuss both sides of the debate and should ultimately choose and argue one of the sides or propose a solution to the issue.  Be sure to use your academic sources to support your arguments.

For all written work, students are expected to think critically about the material and present a well-thought out discussion of the issues.  Papers will be graded based on the quality of the arguments, grammar, proper use of APA style and overall writing style.
