The New 7th Edition APA Style
The new 7th APA Writing format has extensively changed from the old 6th edition. In the current edition, there is more emphasis on a bias-free language. Notably, the technology that is used by researchers, as well as the students, has tremendously changed. Thus, it is essential for one to familiarize with the new APA 7th edition.
References and in-text citations
References is the list of material used in the content. With the new APA Style, citing online sources is more common and it has been made easier and clearer.
One of the critical aspects to note is that the publisher’s location has been excluded from the reference. It means that when referencing one will not be required to indicate the city of the publisher.
Also, the in-text citation for works with more than three authors is now shortened from the first citation. Hence, one is required to use the first author’s name followed by the word ‘et al.’ right from the first citation.
Furthermore, with the 7th edition style, one can include up to 20 surnames and initials of authors in the reference, unlike the 6th edition where only 7 names could be included.
Additionally, DOI is formatted similarly to URLs. More specifically, it is unnecessary to include the label “DOI”.
More so, the URLs are no longer preceded by the word “Retrieved from”. However, it can be included in the retrieval date is necessary. Again, it is necessary to include the website name if it is different from the author’s name. The webpage titles should be italicized.
Inclusive and bias-free language
The new APA publication journal has put more emphasis on the use of bias-free language. Consequently, it will help to reduce bias on aspects like gender, racial, and ethnic identity.
The use of “they” or “their” is endorsed as a gender-neutral pronoun. For example, “One’s career depends on his or her abilities”. It is more appropriate to say “One’s career depends on their ability”.
Descriptive phrases are used to describe groups, unlike using adjectives. For example, instead of saying “The disabled”, it is more preferred to say “People with a disability”.
Paper Format
Different fonts like Calibri 11, Arial 11, Lucida Sans Unicode 10, Times New Roman 12, and Georgia 11 can be used unlike previously where Times New Roman 12 was the only format used.
