Before you begin to perform extensive research on a topic, you must propose a topic to me. The topic proposal will accomplish two things. First, it will show that you have considered your topic fully. Second, it will allow me to review your choice and make recommendations or changes.
The topic proposal should be 400 words (not including the works cited page). You should explore the content of TWO sources on your topic but they must represent TWO OPPOSING views and both sources must be documented in a bibliography/works cited included in your post (but it should NOT be included in the 400 word count).
For example, if you were writing on abortion one article would be Pro-choice, and the other would be Pro-life. You should not argue that one is better than the other; rather you will report what they have to say about the issues. The sources you use should be typical of the side they represent, in other words you want to avoid fringe articles. Try to get to the heart of the perspective on each side of the issue.
This topic proposal should not reveal your bias on the issue in any manner. In fact, if you reveal a bias you will likely have your topic rejected. Your topic may be rejected for any of the following reasons:
It reveals your bias on the topic.
The topic is too general.
The topic is too specific.
The topic is an information-based topic.You propose to write on abortion, religion, Critical Race Theory, cloning, gay marriage, death penalty, or eugenics.
Your topic is not a polemical or controversial topic.
You should strive to report on the basic arguments used on both sides of the issues as well as the rhetorical devices they employ to make their arguments. You must have two documented sources on the same topic for this assignment. Finally, your topic is not approved until I have received and accepted your draft of your topic proposal.
