This week’s discussion will be covering Chapters 7 and 18 of Ninth Edition, Ethics, Theory and Contemporary Issues, by: MacKinnon Fiala
Explain, in detail, the Natural Law theory, including the origins of the theory, the main figures associated with it, what the main principles of the theory are, how it should be applied to determine what we ought to do in an ethical situation, and anything else your group finds to be important and relevant to understanding this theory
Be sure to compare and contrast this theory with those of utilitarianism, Kant’s deontology, and virtue ethics
Also explain the importance of human rights as they are related to the natural law theory
Choose one of the subtopics found in Chapter 18, i.e., athletic and cognitive enhancements, stem cell research, cloning, or genetic engineering and genetic screening. Explain the main moral concerns of this topic.
Evaluate the topic applying Natural Law theory and human rights concerns.
Do you agree with the evaluation of that topic from this ethical perspective. If so, why? If not, which alternative theory (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, ethics of care, ethical relativism) is a stronger approach and why?
