Title your posting with the name of the opinion piece or editorial. (Note well: each posting must address a different op/ed piece – difference is, as they say, the spice of life.)
Within your posting, do the following:
First, provide the MLA citation for the op/ed piece. (If you found the op/ed digitally, also provide the URL.)
Then, organize your notes into three sections.
Section One: AudienceWho is the intended audience for the op/ed? Make this as narrow and specific as the op/ed allows.
Note three pieces of evidence to support your assertion. These pieces of evidence should be in the form of direct quotes from the op/ed.
Section Two: PurposeWhat is the purpose of the op/ed? Again, make this narrow and specific as the op/ed allows. How does the writer achieve this purpose?
Note three pieces of evidence to support your assertions. These pieces of evidence should be in the form of direct quotes from the op/ed.
Section Three: SettingWhat is the setting of the op/ed? What specific context does the writer provide the reader?
Note three pieces of evidence to support your assertions. These pieces of evidence may be in the form of direct quotes; however, the evidence might also be in the placement of the op/ed, the nature of the publication, its timeliness, and so on.
As you offer direct quotes as evidence, include quotation marks and do remember that pesky Plagiarism Pledge. As you analyze for evidence, draw from the set of questions provided in APS Short Writings – Audience Explanation and Example, APS Short Writings – Purpose Explanation and Example, and APS Short Writings – Setting Explanation and Example to help guide your analysis.
The posting must be at least 200 words long (yes, yes: it’s quite long – let’s all put on our grown-up trousers and carry on, shall we?).
