Week 6 Practicum Discussion Responses

Read two or more of your colleagues’ postings from the Discussion question. As a community of practice, give each other specific feedback, including what you have learned, what was well done, what is unclear, and any other helpful suggestions.

Respond to at least two colleagues. Your responses should be substantial and should contribute ideas, tools, alternate points of view, resources, and information related to identified health problems.

For all posts, be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

My project involved distributing condoms and sex education to people experiencing homelessness to reduce sexually transmitted diseases. As I will be discussing in my presentation, people without homes are especially vulnerable to a wide variety of health problems, including STDs. Condoms are a safe, simple, and effective way for people to reduce their risk of contracting diseases like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV.

Social justice describes the condition in which all members of a society enjoy equal rights and opportunities, including the right to good health. I believe my project contributes to social justice by giving people a way to protect their health. It contributes to social change by promoting health awareness and self-empowerment among individuals in this marginalized group.

People experiencing homelessness are often so beaten down by life experiences that they don’t believe they are worthy of care (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). The nurse can help improve the health of this group by taking the time to demonstrate respect when interacting with them. By developing a respectful and empathetic rapport, the nurse can show the client that they are worthy of being listened to, that their feelings and experiences matter. Practicing empathy improves patient outcomes by enhancing communication and increasing patient compliance (Texas A&M International University, 2019).

Another important way the nurse can help improve the health of this group and contribute to social change is by advocating for affordable housing. Rents have increased as much as 40% in some cities across the country and the availability of affordable housing has reached a 30-year low (Sainato, 2022). In many places, landlords have the option to increase rents whenever they want, as much as they want. Basic housing should be a fundamental human right in my opinion, not an investment opportunity for people who already have more than enough.

Social justice is the equal access to wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. My project fulfills social justice by focusing on ways to prevent vaping in teenagers while maintaining cultural competency. My interventions to decrease vaping rates are ones that can be applied to any teenager regardless of their SES, race, or education level. This project contributes to social change by observing a public health issue and establishing resources that are available to help benefit the population’s health. Vaping is considered an ‘epidemic’ among teens, and through making behavioral and social changes, we can reduce the number of adolescents who try vaping.

As an advocate and a healthcare leader it is my responsibility to be the voice for these children. We know that we are seeing children engage in vaping at much younger ages than ever before, and early intervention is key. I must get involved at the school level and connect adolescents with resources to help them quit and push for policies that will protect the youth.
