Interview

Introduction

Jane is a family friend and neighbor. Jane is 73 years old, born in 1946. She lives with her husband Thomas in a house next to the place where her parent’s house stood. Jane grew up in this City and left for college, lived in Washington and then later came back with her husband in their late 50s. They have a large family which is always full of glamor during festivities. I chose Jane because she is a family friend, dating generations. She is easily approachable and we call her our grandmother. Jane has always been a source of lively stories, the person to talk to when you I need to vent out an issue and she is very generous. She has taught me the value of honesty and always staying positive.

Family

Q1. What do you know about your family roots?

A1. I know, from a DNA analysis that my family traces its roots back to Nigeria, among the Igbo people, or among the Congolese and Angola people.

Q2. What do you remember about your grandparents?

A2. I do not remember much since they passed away when I was still very young. But I have heard stories that they came to America to study, and took permanent citizenship, not as slaves.

Q3. Who did you hang out with/play with as a child?

A3. Ironically, I spent most of my childhood hanging with boys since, in my neighborhood, most girls my age were taken to boarding schools. My best friend was called Morgan. My family could not afford the schools, so I had to learn in private schools within Memphis, and we spent most of our time here, growing up.

Q.4 how long did you remain friends?

A4. We are still very good friends. He moved to New York after his graduation, and I moved to Washington. But now, I came back to Memphis, my childhood home, and he also happened to be around most of the time. We are still very good friends.

School

Q5. Describe the school(s) you went to.

A5. I went to a private school for my k-12 studies. It was not very big and most of the children were from poor families.

Q6. Were your classmates from the same ethnic/religious/SES background as you?

A6. Most of my classmates were from my ethnic background. We shared much in common. Morgan, my neighbor and friend was also my classmate. That was a very long time ago.

Work

Q7. How and when did you get your first job?

A7. I got my first job as a shop attendant at a local retail store, now demolished. It was through a referral after my highschool graduation.

Q8. What did the work involve?

A8. My work was simple. I attended to customers, took their orders and money and handed them their goods with change. Back then, the electronic system was not yet popular. We did everything manually. Including writing receipts.

Intimacy

Q9. Did you date as a teenager?

A9. No, I did not. I had many friends, but I was a late bloomer. I discovered love in my mid-twenties.

Q10. Who was your first girlfriend/boyfriend?

A10. My first boyfriend is my current husband, Thomas. We are aged now, but we are still together.

Children

Q11. How many children did you have? When were they born?

A11. I have six children. Twins, born in 1971. My second born girl, was born in 1973, the other in 1976 and another set of twins in 1980. Such a large family.

A12. What is each child like?

A12. I cannot describe them now. They are all grown, each with their own place and with families. I guess I do not know them anymore as I did when they were children.

Other

Q13. What chores or responsibilities did you have as a child?

A13. As a child, I helped my mother in her grocery store. I did not do much, except hang around and watch my mother attend to her customers.

A14. What did you daydream about becoming when you grew up?

A14. I dreamt of becoming a nurse.

Life Review

Q15. What was the most exciting part of your life?

A15. The most exciting part of my life was the birth of my second set of twins. It was a rarity for me, and after that, I decided to stop having any more children. Six children in four births were enough.

A16. What was the most important historical event you witnessed or were part of?

A16. The most important historical even that I witnessed was the election of President Barack Obama. I have never seen so many people happy and united before. I was well over my fifties into my sixties, I guess, but the event was epic to me.

Summary

What I learned from this experience was that the elderly is very welcoming and simple. The most interesting thing was the personality of Jane. Jane is old but full of energy and strong, physically. She can still do most of her chores. Jane’s early life is different from mine because many aspects of the environment have changed. I would be happy too spending my elderly days living in the neighborhood that I grew up in. She says she is reliving her childhood days which helps to keep her young again. I do not know where I will be at that age, but I hope to be half as happy as Jane is, and I will be satisfied.

Reflection

The interview was successful and well done. Jane was open and upfront and did not hesitate to answer any question. She really enjoyed the interview and deviated from many questions, giving details about her personal life, with nostalgia and humor. I really loved the interviewing experience because it helped to build my confidence in qualitative interviewing techniques.
