Mafra, Anthonieta Looman, et al. “The Contrasting Effects of Body Image and Self-Esteem in the Makeup Usage.” PLoS ONE, vol. 17, no. 3, Mar. 2022, pp. 1–11. EBSCOhost, https://doi-org.vvc.idm.oclc.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0265197.
The article discussed the relationship between self-esteem, body image, and makeup. Participants were surveyed regarding their perceived feelings about themselves (self-esteem) and their body image in relation to how much make-up they wore and purchased. For this study, researchers found that the way a person evaluated their appearance was dependent upon how much make-up the individual used, and the results indicated that participants who wore more make-up had lower self-esteem. However, it also indicated that women with higher self-esteem also wore more make-up to attract attention. This article will help support my point and analysis of social media’s strong influence on individual’s views and perceptions of themselves compared to others they see on social media apps, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok because of the increasing rise and popularity of social media “influencers”. I will integrate the results from this article into my essay regarding lower self-esteem individuals and higher self-esteem individuals and their usage of make-up in order to explain how there is a perpetuated negative cycle of influence that exists because of social media and its influencers to the general public observing. Since self-esteem and perceived body image is influenced by the amount of make-up worn and bought to feel better about oneself, I can explain how these ideals are influenced by the frequent images portrayed on social media by influencers who curate their appearance meticulously for popularity and influence.
