The United States of America’s healthcare system and organizations are facing challenges and issues daily. Human resource managers play a significant role in dealing with and addressing these issues. For healthcare organizations to be successful and provide quality care to patients, they have to adapt to changes that are presented to them. There are many significant issues affecting healthcare organizations today.
One major issue affecting healthcare organizations today is healthcare labor shortages. Currently, certain areas in the United States face shortages of critical healthcare workers, including primary care physicians, nurses, behavioral health and long-term care workers, as well as public health and human service professionals. Moreover, this problem is anticipated to increase in the coming years. More than half of the counties in the United States have no behavioral health worker at all. (Flynn et al., 2016) Another major issue affecting healthcare organizations today is access to healthcare services. According to aafp.org, Over the past two decades, policies implemented through the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) have extended access to affordable health care coverage to millions of previously uninsured, non-Medicare eligible adults and children. Another major issue affecting healthcare organizations today is the advancement of technology. The healthcare system in the United States is very focused on research and innovation in new technology. The adoption of new medical technologies generally creates demand for new services despite the higher costs typically associated with the new technologies. (Flynn et al., 2016)
Human resource managers play a vital role in dealing with or addressing these issues. Human resource managers can address labor shortages by partnering up with medical colleges and opening up a residency program at the facility. These managers can offer signing bonuses and perks to potential healthcare employees. Human resource managers can make sure their hospital is adapting to the new technology in the healthcare world. As a human resource manager in a hospital setting, I would make sure my employees feel important and respected. I would offer signing bonuses and perks to combat the shortages in the hospital. I would make sure my employees can use the new technology in the healthcare world.
