American Nurses Association (ANA) establishes the nursing standards that apply to all nurses. The main function of nursing standards is to maintain and direct safe and clinically

competent nursing practice (American Nurses Association, 2009). Standards of practice explains the competent level of all nursing practices as evidenced by the nursing processes which include assessment that is collection of information related to patient care, diagnosis which is the analysis of the data collected, outcome identification, planning which prescribes strategies to be used to achieve certain outcome, implementation of the plan and finally evaluation of the progress towards achievement of desired outcome (American Nurses Association, 2009).

My work setting demonstrates the quality of patient care using the nursing process.  My work setting uses these nursing processes for decision making and manages all the activities done by the nurses to achieve quality patient care. For example, in case of a serious medical condition, the organization uses the standards to come up with the solution. Data based on a patient’s condition is collected then analyzed, and the results are applied to achieve the desired outcome. Nurses are assigned their duties based on their specialties. My work setting has achieved quality patient care with the application of nursing processes.

In my practice, ANA standards of practice enabled me to understand the expectations of my role.  It gave an insight into how to use this nursing process to perform my duties and ensure quality patient care. ANA standards of practice helped me identify what it takes to succeed as a nurse, and it enabled me also to understand how to act and think in my role. For example, with the help assessment standard, I always collect information that relates to a certain medical condition, analyzing it helps me to understand how to assess a certain situation.
