A genetic screen for mutant zebrafish defective in hematopoiesis.

In week 2 we went over a paper describing a genetic screen for mutant zebrafish defective in hematopoiesis. Assume that one of the genes identified there has been cloned and sequenced and that a mouse homolog has been found. Describe which gene it is. Describe at least three experiments that you could do in mice to ask what the mouse homolog does during mouse hematopoiesis. Describe the hypothesis you are testing and how the zebrafish data indicated to you that you should look at its role in the mouse. For each experiment describe all the possible outcomes (at least 2 and possibly more) and how you would interpret each outcome. Be sure to include appropriate controls and explain how the controls lend rigor to the experimental results. I am most interested in how you think about this project and how in general you would proceed to examine the role of this gene using genetic tools in the mouse.
