ANALYZE A SOCIAL ACTION AND WRITE AN EXPOSITORY/REFLECTION PAPER: Identify any issue
ANALYZE A SOCIAL ACTION AND WRITE AN EXPOSITORY/REFLECTION PAPER:
Identify any issue RELATED TO GENDER, SEXUALITY and JUSTICE we have addressed in class thus far and/or through the readings/case studies for the next few weeks: the Embodiment of Colonization, Environmental Justice and Indigenous Rights through Gender and Sexuality; and Pornography vs. The Erotic.
Choose a social action that has already been done to analyze: could be a hashtag, petition, starting a group or organization, going to or starting a protest, organizing a dialogue, policy (community vs municipal and state policy), documentary film, videos…
Which theories from class frame the action? Social Constructionism, Symbolic Interactionism, Queer Theory and Intersectionality
Discuss the connection of your action to the larger movement.
What is the historical context of this action and movement?
Has it been done before?
Was it successful and why?
Who did it affect? How do you know they were affected?
What were the intended and unintended consequences?
Cite literature on social media activism and/or social protest, social change, persuasion, role of other forms of media in protest, etc. Why is your form of action effective? What is the evidence to show its efficacy? How has it worked in the past?
How does the Action work right now in today’s climate? i.e. activism during an election. What are the distinctions/personal positions on virtual activism versus marching or in-person protest? Which are more effective and why?
What are your recommendations based on your analysis? What can be done to improve on a current movement? What new action would you propose? What are Innovative ideas for virtual/remote activism, creativity, in addition to hashtags, what else should people/movements be doing?
PLEASE HAVE FUN WITH THIS ONE! 2-4 pages. Use images, screen shots. If the action you choose to analyze is artistic, share the piece (can be a song, dance, book, poem if it was part of a social movement and had significant effect). We want you to set it up like an expository piece with a thesis statement and clear evidence to support your primary claim BUT be reflective in your writing style. Discuss your thoughts, feelings and personal experience related to the subject matter. PLEASE USE AT LEAST 5 sources. Two should be from academic journals citing studies. USE APA STYLE format NO Abstract or cover page necessary.
