Calculate Young’s Modulus and the tensile strength

An aligned short fibre composite was produced by resin moulding with the following
characteristics;
? Volume fraction of 0.35 (35%) glass fibres
? Fibre diameter is 16 µm and length is 10 mm
? Fibre fracture strength, which equals the fibre tensile strength is 2.0 GPa
? Matrix strength is 95 MPa
? The shear strength at the fibre/matrix interface is 1.1 MPa
a) Calculate the tensile strength of the composite.
b) Calculate the percentage of reinforcement efficiency.
c) Suggest ways to improve reinforcement efficiency.

3- A unidirectionally reinforced glass fibre/epoxy composite is to be fabricated with a 40%
fibre volume fraction. The tensile strength of the fibre is 1300 MPa and the Young’s
modulus is 85 GPa. The tensile strength of the epoxy matrix is 70 MPa with modulus of
elasticity of 2800 MPa. Calculate Young’s Modulus and the tensile strength of the
composite in the longitudinal direction. Assume the fibre and matrix deform elastically.
