City Selection Assignment

Upon reviewing the selection list of cities, I discovered two cities of interest to me were not listed.  I have chosen in descending order Virginia Beach, VA, Portland Maine, Temple Arizona.  Choosing Virginia Beach, VA was easy for me although I had visited Virginia Beach before while my brother was stationed in Norfolk Naval Station, Va. My second visit occurred for my daughter’s wedding it was during this visit that my father and I drove from Cleveland, Ohio to Virginia Beach, VA, and the two of us arguing along the way because my dad did not think he needed MapQuest. “I’m an experienced driver hell I drive for a living Angela” states my dad. and he did, but that did not stop us from getting lost he and I both laughed when he realized we were lost. While being lost I saw the most beautiful and tranquil scenery the fall colors will blow you away. It’s not Fiji or the Caribbean but Virginia has beautiful beaches, it’s also a great place to explore U. S. history as well. Being close to Washington, DC, would give me the opportunity to visit the museums and historical monuments. My next choice in city selection is Portland, Maine the reason for this city was once a key destination freedom trail that helped African Americans escape slavery in the South by boarding ships to Canada and England. The Underground Railroad was a network used by enslaved African Americans to obtain their freedom 30 years before the Civil War (1860-1865).” The Underground Railroad” often used many routes from states in the South, which supported slaves, to freedom in the North and Canada. I am curious to see this place being my paternal great-grandmother was a slave and she spoke of the freedom trail. Also, for the opportunity to visit where Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and his sister Anne was born. I read their family home sat on acres of farmland that had views all the way to the ocean. Longfellow wrote some of his most famous works there. I happen to find out that Anne, became Widowed in her mid-20s, she refused to remarry but spent her energy on social projects, such as helping women into work. Her legacy includes the library next to the house that holds the Maine Historical Society’s archives, which also tells stories from the city through temporary exhibits. Then there’s the Portland Museum of Art a modestly sized yet exceptionally curated overview of American art and its influences. And finally, the exceptional choice of seafood year-round.

Rounding out my city selection is Temple, Arizona although I’ve never been here. This is where my brother brought a condo and relocated after retiring from the United States Navy.  I don’t know about relocating but would like to visit for the longest-standing, juried arts festival the Tempe Festival of the Arts. Tempe is known for hosting year-round events, I discovered there’s plenty to do in this city a hot air balloon ride would be an exhilarating experience. As you float thousands of feet above the Earth’s surface, you can see entire landscapes. Tempe is in the Eastern Valley section of metropolitan Phoenix; while bordered by Phoenix and Guadalupe on the west, Scottsdale and the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community on the north, Chandler on the south, and Mesa on the east. Tempe is the location of the main campus of Arizona State University. Looking forward to the trip.
