Drug Use and Society
An enabler – one that enables another to achieve an end; especially one who enables another to persist in selfdestructive behavior (such as substance abuse) by providing excuses or by making it possible to avoid the
consequences of such behavior.
In the movie/documentary, the lead actor/main character was an individual who abused drugs for a very long
period of time throughout their lives. Both of them were “highly functional addicts” who could ply their trade
despite the fact that they abused drugs as often as they could. They both did so with the help of many ancillary
individuals who helped them reach that end.
Your assignment is to:
1. Identify at least 3 individuals in the movie/documentary who were enablers to the main character and
2. Explain specifically how they enabled the main character in his abuse of drugs. What they did or did not do
to reach this end.
3. Talk about what are some of the positive steps that the enablers could have taken to assist the addicts to not
abuse drugs
