Evidence-Based Project, Part 3: Critical Appraisal of Research

Realtors rely on detailed property appraisals—conducted using appraisal tools—to assign market values to houses and other properties. These values are then presented to buyers and sellers to set prices and initiate offers.

Research appraisal is not that different. The critical appraisal process utilizes formal appraisal tools to assess the results of research to determine value to the context at hand. Evidence-based practitioners often present these findings to make the case for specific courses of action.

In this Assignment, you will use an appraisal tool to conduct a critical appraisal of published research. You will then present the results of your efforts.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and the four systematic reviews (or other filtered high- level evidence) you selected in Module 3.
  • Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and analyzed in Module 3.
  • Review and download the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template provided in the Resources.

Part 3A: Critical Appraisal of Research

Conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected by completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template. Choose a total of four peer- reviewed articles that you selected related to your clinical topic of interest in Module 2 and Module 3.

Note: You can choose any combination of articles from Modules 2 and 3 for your Critical Appraisal. For example, you may choose two unfiltered research articles from Module 2 and two filtered research articles (systematic reviews) from Module 3 or one article from Module 2 and three articles from Module 3. You can choose any combination of articles from the prior Module Assignments as long as both modules and types of studies are represented.

Part 3B: Critical Appraisal of Research

Based on your appraisal, in a 1-2-page critical appraisal, suggest a best practice that emerges from the research you reviewed. Briefly explain the best practice, justifying your proposal with APA citations of the research.

 

 

 

Identifying Research Methodologies

Clinical Issue: Nurses play a huge role as patients’ advocate. This means that they are frequently needed to engage in shift work given the 24/7 nature of their work in health care setting. In this perspective, the clinical issue of the effects of night shift arises among nurses arises.

The study provided by the article relates well with the clinical issue of the effects of nursing shifts and coping strategies. Is it worth to have nurses working in night but end up providing negative patient outcome The main aim of the article main aim of the article is to explore and discuss the common coping strategies employed by shift nurses in health care setting. The article uses a qualitative analysis of open-ended items regarding to how nurses cope with shift work. A workforce survey is given to shift and non-shift nurses. The study collected a sample of 449 nurses from three hospitals.  The article uses qualitative research method through survey to collect data from the participants. The use of survey is ideal and useful in describing the characteristics of the larger population. The use of survey was also convenient since questionnaires can be sent online while adhering to Covid-19 protocols. Validity is also enhanced through triangulation. To test for reliability, the article constantly tests and compares data.

The impact of shift work on the psychological and physical health of nurses in a general hospital: a comparison between rotating night shifts and day shifts. Risk management and healthcare policy9, 203. The article explore the topic of the effects of shift work on physical and psychological health of nurses. The article aligns resonates well the clinical issue of night shift effects on nurses. The ethical issues relates to how night shift affects quality of care provided by involved nurses. The aim of the research is to provide a comparison between nurses working in day shift and night shift to identify whether night shift causes nurses to experience poorer health conditions and lower job satisfaction.  The study uses cross-sectional study design, a type of observational study design, which is a quantitative research to measure the outcome and exposure of night shifts and its effects at the same time.  The use of cross-sectional study design is ideal since it is relatively quick and inexpensive to conduct since it does not involve long period of follow ups. Moreover, as a type of observational study, cross-sectional study was able to measure the prevalence of all variable under investigation.

The article begins without the statement that hospitals and other health care setting employ more night shift workers than any other industry. Based on this statement, the article resonates well with the clinical issue of the impact of night shift among nurses. Because of the large numbers of nurses working in night shift, there is an ethical issue of the negative impacts on their health as well as patient care outcome.  The aim of the research study is to explore the night shift work among the nurses and identify the health effects. The purpose of the study is based on the fact that the few studies have demonstrated the correlation between night shifts and its impacts on health of nurses. The research use a quantitative research using cross-sectional descriptive research design.The study incorporates three qualitative open-ended questions. The study uses survey monkey to collect data with internet based confidential data collection tool.     The use of cross-sectional descriptive research enables the researcher to collect data from distinct participants at single point in time. Further, the research methodology also enables a researcher to observe variables without influencing them. This means that the reliability of the research is enhanced since the research instrument would yield the same results when used in the same situation on repeated occasions.  
Allawa, R. R. (2014). Assessment of Night-Shift Effects on Nurses’ Health in Intensive Care Units in Some Hospitals of Nineveh Governorate. Mosul Journal of Nursing2(1), 9-12. The article selection is based on its effectiveness to develop a discussion on how night shifts impacts nurses. In this perspective, the article resonate with clinical issue of night shift by highlighting that there is a significant relationship between night shift and health problems such as sleeping disorders. The aim of the research study is to assess the impacts of night shift on nurse’s intensive care units. The research study uses quantitative research methodology using descriptive research design. In the descriptive research, the research does not manipulate any of the variables but only observes and measures them. The use of descriptive research methodology enables researcher to observe the subject under study in its environment without alteration whatsoever, which enhances the reliability of the study. Further, the use of descriptive is useful in exploring the research topic since little is known about the topic.

The article expound on the impacts of nurses working in the night shift. The topic under the study research resonate well with the clinical issue of effective of nursing shifts on physical and psychological health of nurses. The aim of the research is to develop an understanding of the experience of Registered Nurses (RN) working in night shift, the effects of work as well as coping with family and social stressors. The research study uses a qualitative, phenomenological research methodology randomly selecting a sample of 21 registered nurses from a hospital.  The use of phenomenological research enables the researcher to study conscious experience as experienced from the nurses.
