Healthy People 2020

Healthy people 2020 focuses on achieving four overarching goals, including achieving health equity, eliminating disparities, as well as improving the health of groups altogether. It also aims at creating the physical and social environments which promote good health. Further, Healthy people 2020 aims to attain longer lives that are of high quality and free from disability, premature death, injures, and preventable diseases. Eventually, it aims at promoting healthy development, healthy behaviors, and quality of life across all stages (HealthyPeople.gov, 2010).

One of the objectives of this decade’s initiative is to reduce the proportion of adolescents and children between the ages of 2-19 who are obese. The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents is still high, with about 13.7 million affected children and adolescents leading to issues such as breathing difficulties, diabetes, and heart diseases (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). However, there are intervention strategies that may be crucial in managing obesity among children and adolescents. Using the MAP-IT (mobilize, access, plan, implement, and track) tool, the problem can be addressed.

Through mobilization, children, parents, teachers, and nutritional experts can come together to develop programs that would be fundamental in promoting healthy living. The main plan is to create relevant programs that would manage the present obesity cases and prevent the occurrence of others.

Access is the other critical step that would involve collecting the necessary data of affected individuals like diet intake. Later, this step would also cover an analysis of the available resources that can be used as well as those that are unavailable to determine the needed intervention.

The third step is planning that entails identifying goals like initiating a dietary program and physical exercises. The ultimate goal is to managing the existing obesity and preventing new cases.

Implementation will require putting the set plans into action. The use of a different diet and exercise programs will be essential at this stage.

Lastly, tracking the results and changes observed after the implementation of the program will be critical to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and the goal.
