Self-Reflection and Self-Assessment
A holistic approach in nursing entails addressing patient’s wellness through attending to their social, biological, psychological, as well as spiritual needs through the idea that they are all (Practicalnursing.org, 2020). One of the pioneers for holistic nursing is Florence Nightingale, who believed that a patient’s environment could impact the health of that patient. A holistic approach is essential in nursing as it promotes better nurse-patient relationships that positively influence the patient’s wellness. Self-reflection and self-assessment are critical concepts in the practice of nursing as they enhance a holistic approach towards service delivery.
In my nursing profession, I came across several challenges, with the foremost relating to different cultural backgrounds of people. Different cultures have various beliefs concerning the treatment of illnesses, and with such instances, the practice of nursing became a daunting task.
However, with a reflection of what holistic nursing entails, I managed to change my approach and adjust accordingly to provide the best services possible. In my reflection, one of the people who helped to adjust was Florence Nightingale. From her actions, she demonstrated what a nurse is supposed to do. From her deeds, I understood that nursing required a benevolent approach in administering treatment and ensuring a patient recovers fully, with no complications. All nurses ought to spread kindness, love, and care through their services to patients who need their attention.
Upon conducting a self-assessment, I realized that in had demonstrated some weaknesses concerning what was required of me while attending to patients. I realized that my weaknesses could be worked on for better service delivery. The need for change was crucial in addressing the

challenges that nurses face. My performance needed increased efforts, and from Nightingale’s example as a nurse, I learned a lot. My objective is to uphold similar values, as shown by Nightingale. Furthermore, from my growing experience in nursing, I will strive to provide services in the best way possible through a holistic approach.
Cultural Competence Communication
The concept of culturally competent communication denotes the ability to interact with people from various cultures through understanding the health disparities, as well as the influence of sociocultural factors on health behaviors and beliefs (Loftin, Hartin, Branson, & Reyes, 2019). My chosen nursing practice is nurse coaching, which entails the practice of establishing professional relationships with clients to allow them to share and discuss their challenges and generate beneficial changes for their lives (Giza, 2017).
The role of a nurse coach is critical in the efforts towards assisting patients in living better lives. However, an understanding of the patient’s background is vital in offering help. As such, the concept of cultural competence in communication is crucial. To effectively apply the concept of nurse coaching, one of the most critical element is to understand the sociocultural factors that affect health for any particular individual. After that, it is vital to incorporate the underlying factors that relate to that specific patient. For instance, a nurse coach can advise patients on foods that the patient understands for them to comply with quickly.
An in-depth understanding of the patient’s sociocultural factor can be of great significance in administering proper treatment or advice in the case of nurse coaching. However, professional roles are often faced by challenges. Some of the possible barriers include language and limited resources. Insofar as language is concerned, the use of an interpreter may become

necessary to help facilitate the communication process. The issue of limited resources may require community support or the intervention of government and other related agencies to address the issue of resource availability.
