In The Effective Administrator, Donald Walker recommends shortening the administrative lines when things get complicated.

Many times, it is simply better to talk things out than to write. Only in rare circumstances, for example, should you write an angry memo or letter. (If you must write in anger, be sure that you not only state your complaint but also propose a solution.) In The Effective Administrator, Donald Walker recommends shortening the administrative lines when things get complicated. His advice when handling difficult matters is not to sit down at your computer but to “get everyone concerned in the same room.”

Effective communication is considered one of the most critical skills for Soldiers today. As Soldiers, we will find ourselves in difficult situations here in Garrison and also in designated combat areas across the globe. By definition, Effective Communication is the ability to convey information to another effectively and efficiently. Leaders with good verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills help facilitate the sharing of information between people within an organization. In today’s modern world, there are many various types of new communication and it’s more important than ever to build on teamwork that works well when the pressure is on. Quality communication can mean the difference between success and failure in any organization. The U.S Military is spending a fortune to teach our troops how to communicate effectively. I feel that face-to-face interaction works best to defuse the situation and gathering all the personnel needed for discussion. Communications can be misconstrued through texted messages, emails, and even written letters. Too many times communication is misinterpreted through written communication. I feel it is typical for someone to let emotions get involved and shoot out an email or text message before thinking it through entirely. In today’s society, we are losing that important face-to-face communication in which the person addressing the room can share their feeling. Social media has taken control of today’s society and came also be blamed for misinterpreted communication amongst people. To effectively handle a situation with multiple people, if you have the means to bring everyone together in the same room, do it before you react inappropriately and cause more damage than good. I would suggest that you should only write when you cannot handle the situation face-to-face or in a group.
