Marcelo Morales.

Read selections from Marcelo Morales. Excerpts from The World asPresence (2016), 2017 interview with
Morales from BOMB magazine, poem “The Sun
Rises Again on America” (from his still-unpublished manuscript, The Star-Spangled Brand”), and the short set
of pandemic writings from 2020.
HW 9: Marcelo Morales writes prose poetry; here you get not only poems, but an interview and a little
background context in an essay from me. Right now Morales is living in his family apartment in the Vedado
district of Havana, where the pandemic has severely compromised the economy by crippling the tourism
industry (also impacted by the current administration’s handling of the US economic embargo, which is still in
place). Reflect on specifics from these various files today, all published in 2016 or later. What draws your
attention? Consider any links you see to other materials from this semester as well as what might feel current.
Don’t worry about having to come to Authoritative Conclusions: as a genre, poetry often leads us to ask
questions. Poetry’s
openness to the unknown, its inhabitation of different dimensions of the consciousness, and its willingness to
confront ambiguity can make reading poems very different from, say, reading newspapers or academic studies
or political propaganda). Poems will not claim to answer every question they raise; however, questions can be
valuable in their own right. (Why?)
