The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate understanding of the most

The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate understanding of the most critical elements of a quality research paper by constructing their own planned study. In actual clinical practice, before researchers and clinicians can conduct a large, high quality trial or other experiment, the plan that they have in place must often go through peer review and publication before the study begins. There are many good reasons for doing this:
The study plan can receive feedback from multiple experts for improved safety and quality before any patients/participants become involved, or any funding is spent

Once the protocol is published, it is a publicly available document – if the researchers deviate from their published plan once the study is underway, there is no way for them to ‘cover their tracks’. They are held more accountable for following the research protocol as planned

In this class, you will be developing an individual research question and creating a plan for researching your question; the research protocol. This stage requires you to use the literature, your critical thinking skills, and synthesis skills to make sound design decisions that are clearly articulated and feasible. Use the knowledge gained from class, the journal club project and your own reading/experience to inform your choices.

Justification statements or paragraphs should explain why you chose your research components and how these choices best fit to answer your research question. While you can’t submit this document as your final product, if you follow each step diligently, it can serve as a starting point for constructing your final protocol manuscript, which should be formatted like the journal articles you’ve been reading throughout the semester.
