Different theories of intelligence have been developed over time, and different people credited with the development of these theories. One of these people in Charles Spearman, who is known for the general intelligence theory. Spearman’s approach of general intelligence that focuses on specific mental abilities of an individual. However, the theory has been criticized for its use of a single general intelligence to measure the mental capacity of humans (Cherry, How general intelligence influences performance on cognitive tasks, 2019). Insofar as the theory is concerned, one in many of its critiques, argued that, indeed, there exist various multiple intelligences.

            Concerning the critique backed up by the proposition of the existence of multiple different bits of intelligence, Howard Gardner is known for his involvement. Gardner mentioned that traditional theories regarding intelligence were limited. Concerning that, he suggested that eight intelligences exist and with the possibility of a ninth one (Cherry, Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, 2019). He further backed up his argument by stating that one might be strong in a specific area, but also possess other abilities. However, his theory also faced criticism based on lack of empirical evidence and that the several bits of intelligence mentioned could be abilities, talents, and personality traits.

            I think that Sternberg’s Triarchic theory of intelligence stands out from the two former approaches. Sternberg proposes three separate types of intelligence including, analytical, practical, and distinct. The theory is further divided into three sub-theories, each relating to the primary classes (Vinney, 2020). I think this is the best theory because it provides a better understanding of individual cognitive functions. More so, it allows us to understand and focus on the abilities we possess. It further allows us to work on the abilities that we are weak in. The fact that the theory suggests that we can improve our abilities places it at another advantage as compared to other theories.
