Thesis Statement
The concept of deterrence does apply to cyber warfare for the following reasons; (1) there are successful deterrent strategies that apply to the cyber domain, (2) without cyber deterrence nations, such as the USA, are at increased risk for cyberattacks and (3) with the everchanging nature of the cyberworld, deterrence is essential in enhancing cybersecurity to protect vital information as well as technological infrastructures.

Harknett, R. J.& Nye Jr. J.S. (2017). Is Deterrence Possible in Cyberspace? International Security, 42(2), 196-199.
This article explores the need of cyber deterrence from a critical perspective and questions the validity of cyber deterrence. At the tactical level, the “terrain” of cyber engagement is constantly changing. Harknett critically appraises Nye’s pro-detterence article and identifies and outlines the interconnectedness of the cyber world and doubts the relevance of detterance. Nye then counteracts this by explaining that deterrence while imperfect, because of this interconnectedness, is still essential to cyber security. This source is relevant as it adequately describes the complex nature of the cyber world in which many vulnerabilities live therefore creating the necessity for deterrence strategies to optimize cyber security.
Obama, B. (2011). International Strategy for Cyberspace: Prosperity, Security, and Openness in a Networked World (Washington, DC: White House, May 2011), 14. Issued in, 11-14.

The article is written by the office of the president, who is the head of security issues in the nation. This gives him a strong ethos to write on national security issues. This article is relevant as it highlights policies and deterrent strategies signed by the president. It also outlines policies that have been given priorities by the national government and attributes that can lead to effective deterrence.
