This
assignment provides an opportunity to apply psychological theory in the
exploration of the film “50 First Dates.” You may want to look at some of the
later sections in the course that deal with emotion, motivation, personality,
the development of the individual over the life span, health and stress, and
psychological disorders and treatment, so that you have a more complete idea of
different concepts that might apply.

discuss
defense mechanisms or refer to developmental stages in the person’s life that
might have been important, or consider the effects of abuse, alcoholism and
addiction, etc. Or you could approach the subject matter from different
perspectives—psychoanalytical, biological, behavioral, cognitive, and/or
sociocultural. Additionally, you could discuss the role emotion, memory, or
motivation plays in the character’s development, or the importance of the
environment, and influences such as racism and sexism. A sample paper is
provided as well to guide you in content, formatting, organizing, and writing
your paper. This is only a sample and you should not use any content from this
sample directly in your paper.

This is a
research-based paper, and the film or book provides only the backdrop for
research on a psychological topic. You should use at least two psychological,
peer-reviewed references (textbook can be used but does not count towards the
peer-reviewed references required). The paper should be 1,200 to 1,500 words,
about 5 double-spaced pages. The final paper portion of the assignment is worth
65 points and will be graded according to the attached rubric. This assignment
will be reviewed by Turnitin and generate a similarity report upon submission
to LEO. A new similarity report will be generated every time you upload the
assignment until the due date. Please use this similarity report to improve
your paper as plagiarism will NOT be tolerated. Please see my instructions on
using Turnitin for additional information.

Title: Analyzing Anterograde Amnesia and Memory as depicted
in “50 First Dates”

I.
Introduction

A. Introductory statement: 50 First
Dates is a romantic comedy about Henry and Lucy. Lucy was in a car accident and
suffered severe brain damage that affected her short-term memory and causes her
to relive the same day over. The accident damaged her hippocampal region and
was diagnosed with anterograde amnesia as she is unable to develop and keep new
memories. Henry falls in love with Lucy, but the next day she does not
recognize him. After Henry understands her illness, he devises a plan for Lucy
to fall in love with him daily.

B. Thesis statement: In this paper,
I will explore memory, causes, and lifestyle impacts of anterograde amnesia
through the main character Lucy, in the movie “50 First Dates.”

II. Body

A. Summarize the Media/Movie (Topic
Sentence): The movie “50 First Dates”, evolves around Lucy Whitmore who is
involved in a horrible car accident that caused sever brain damage. The brain
damage caused Lucy to suffer from short-term memory loss due to damage to her
temporal lobe.

1. Anterograde amnesia is when one
can no longer retain new information that has occurred after a specific event. Lucy
can no longer form long-term memories that occurred after her father’s birthday.

2. Lucy’s short-term memory hold
the memory for what happens each day she meets Henry. However, when she falls
asleep, she forgets what happened the day before and relives it as she did the
day of her accident.

3. Lucy’s head injury makes her
unable to recall any new memories for instance the day after she meets Henry,
she does not recognize him and believes he is a stranger.  This is what makes him come up with different
schemes each day to see her, like pretending he cannot read and having her help
him read the menu at the café.

4. Lucy has issues with storing
information into her long-term memory. She is unable to access anything stored
into her long-term memory from before her accident.

1. Diagnosis of anterograde amnesia
is performed using imaging scans, blood test, and other examinations that detect
the damage. “The most used tool is the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). It
is most commonly used to diagnose memory loss. Another test is the Six Item
Cognitive Impairment Test (6CIT) or the Kingshill test. For memory loss related
to aging especially in the hospital settings commonly used test is the
Abbreviated Mental Test (AMT) (Mandal, 2019)”

2. Anterograde amnesia is commonly
related to drug use but can be cause due to an accident and severe brain
damage.

3. In hopes of a cure, her they showed
her a tape to prove her short-term memory loss and she was distraught. However,
she drew a picture of Henry and said she saw him in her dreams as a sign of
progress.

4. There is no cure for anterograde
amnesia, and it is irreversible. However, progression is possible with
rehabilitation. “Treatments for anterograde amnesia are primarily aimed at
managing the condition. There are no medications approved by the FDA to treat
amnesia, but vitamin B1 (thiamine) supplements may be used in instances where
there is a vitamin deficiency. Technology tools can also be used to offer
assistance, often in the form of daily planners and reminder apps (Cuncic,
2020).”

C. Apply Psychological Concepts to
Movie (Topic Sentence): Lucy received her condition due to a car accident and
brain damage. However, it is noted that some patients that are diagnosed with
anterograde amnesia are unable to remember something they did 10 minutes prior.
“HM had, at the age of twenty-seven, undergone a lobotomy in an attempt to cure
his epilepsy. Afterwards, HM had ended up with anterograde amnesia. While his
memories up until the operation were intact, he had no ability to make new
memories (Inglis-Arkell, 2015).”

1. Lucy receives a movie that
depicts events that she has missed and eventually adapts to it. However, if
diagnosed with anterograde amnesia, she would not be able to remember it.

2. Every night before she goes to
bed Lucy will go and paint the wall of her family’s garage. This shows that
after her brain injury, she retained her procedural memory.

3. Lucy does not have a declarative
memory, the memory of facts and experiences that one can consciously know and
talk about, because she wakes up every day believing that it is her father’s
birthday.

III. Conclusion

A. Closing statement: One would
think that Lucy’s brain injury would deter anyone from falling in love with
her. However, this light-hearted comedy displayed how love wins as they presented
many psychology terms such as motivation and coping.

B. Restate thesis: I have explored
memory, the causes, and lifestyle impacts of anterograde amnesia through the
main character Lucy, in the movie “50 First Dates.”
