To Drive Creativity, Pick the Right Team
Miron-Spektor, Erez and Naveh (2011) identified three types of thinkers, which include creative, conformists, and detail-oriented. The creative are the ones who generate innovative ideas; however, they do not follow the rules so much, and they can start a conflict. Conformist relates well with others, but they do not use their critical thinking skills; instead, they follow what has been set or said without questioning. They avoid conflicts and promote cooperation within the team. Detail-oriented people pay much attention to details. They are keen in exploring an issue, proactive, patient, and determined (Miron-Spektor et al., 2011).
My team has both conformists and creative thinkers. It is a good combination, but without detail-oriented people, we have been experiencing some innovative challenges, which include the following. First, we have been having a problem with communication issues such as who is responsible for a particular part of a project and this has led to delays and errors. Secondly is that we have been having problems with completing a task on time. Lack of attention to detail makes us inefficient because we do not follow the timelines. Thirdly is that we have been having issues with customer experiences. Lack of people in our group who can look beyond what customers normally want and think of what they might need makes the customers feel that they are part of the organization.
If asked to change my team, I will ensure that all three types of thinkers are in my team. Having people from different cognitive types will improve the levels of innovation, and I will ensure that there is a balance so that one does not suppress the other one. The creative will ensure that new ideas are generated, conformists will ensure that there is cohesion in the team and detail-oriented people will ensure a successful implementation of a project and that there are no errors.
