Veterans and military soldiers, during times of war, witness lots of traumatic situations which haunt them. These experiences later result in Posttraumatic stress disorder, which affects the way they relate with their family members, thus raises a lot of concerns, especially to the affected persons. There is, therefore, a need to educate veterans on how to treat and deal with PTSD. Some of the concerned relevant departments include; Department of Defense (DOD), The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and The National Institute of Health (NIH). The above social science resources not only help in dealing with the situation they also help in doing further research concerning PTSD, especially among the veterans. Although they all do different investigations, the outcome is supposed to be compiled to aid decision-making.
First, the NIH carries out all researches concerning the clinical and basics. They later revealed to the public the PTSD’s prevention, diagnosis and treatment measures they are to take. Secondly, VA is involved in the health of the veterans and also translates research findings into clinical care. Lastly, the Department of Defense focuses on further research concerning PTSD’s prevention and treatment. However, they rely on the expertise of the VA and NIH. The three bodies are involved with the military personalities, thus making them the most recommendable resources to use. The three organizations in collaboration have resulted in significant results in the research on PTSD in the recent past. Conducting suicide and mental-health-related campaigns are one of the principles used to curb PTSD. Media training being the primary medium used by the VA and DOD to discuss preventive measures of dealing with the disorder. Such programs give room for discussing matters such as crisis intervention among the veterans.
Besides, the principle of effective health communication is another recommendable principle to use. NIH is the most relevant source to talk to people about their health problems when it comes PTSD. The NIH will convey accurate information in the most convenient way for the veterans. They will ensure that they talk of the side effects, signs and symptoms of PTSD and lastly the various treatment methods. Communication is the primary tool to channel information concerning PTSD; it will get used efficiently. The issuing of fliers and some adverts concerning health talks will be of significant importance to all the military soldiers. These will help them get to know more about the disorder and how to deal with it if they experience. These principles will help reduce the rate of suicidal cases among veterans.
Veterans are the first people to most suitable with this information since they tend to witness the traumatic events more often. These will be of great help to them as they will be taught on ways to avoid the PTSD in earlier stages before they get affected further and end up killing themselves. Furthermore, they will get to understand their causes and side effects. These will also aid the veterans in getting to know if their peers are experiencing the same problem and help them. In addition to telling the veterans, their officials should also be informed that they are at a higher probability of experiencing PTSD. Thus, too much pressure should not be given in the workplace. The veterans affected by the PTSD will also be given medical attention and leave for some days so that it fastens the healing process.
Not leaving the close relatives behind, they should also get informed about the PTSD. These are essential as they will be able to note any change of behavior and get to know the problem. Instead of thinking of suicide when they show signs of PTSD, they will seek medical attention. (Finley, 2011) Discrimination among the veterans who have the PTSD will get significantly reduced, and this will make ease of depression issues which later lead to suicide. Lastly, the government which issues authority for the military soldiers to head for war should also get to understand this PTSD. They should find ways of helping those who get traumatized after the war. These include offering them free medical services to cater for their treatment. Giving them an allowance to perform duties which have little or no traumatizing events which in turn help to reduce the PTSD. (Fontana, 2004)The expertise in the three organizations would be best in addressing the situation as they have done most of the research concerning PTSD. With the use of primary languages which the community, in general, would be the best way to communicate to the veterans. These include the use of examples of traumatic situations they face daily to help them understand PTSD better.
However, even after addressing the situation to the most suitable persons, there are some questions which remain unanswered. For instance, after the veterans get treated, do they the traumatic events get back to them and haunt them? Second, does the treatment used to get all the veterans in a better condition? Thirdly, do the veterans positively take the medication? Lastly, what initiative does the government take in supporting the soldiers affected by the PTSD? Thus as a social scientist, I would consider following up on the patients to track their progress. By monitoring their progress, we also get to help those who have not yet improved to get better treatment services. (Owens, 2012). More treatment methods should be implemented to have a variety of ways of treating their patients. These mostly apply to the veterans who have do not like the type of treatment they receive. It is also advisable that the veterans, especially those with PTSD, given lighter jobs. Sometime of rest will also be vital for them as they get to interact with their family members which will help reduce the disorder.
In conclusion, as a social scientist, the government should also be supportive enough to not only to the social science resources but also the veteran affected. The government cheeping in with physical resources to the research organizations would be great. These will help improve on the research work they organizations do. Financial support would also be an added advantage for the research organization and the veterans. For instance, if the government stands up for the medical expenses incurred by the veterans with PTSD. The veterans will feel so much supported by the government. Following these steps will lead to a more positive impact not only the veterans but also their family members. These will result in a reduction in the number of suicide cases and the spread of PTSD patients among veterans.
