Write a technical report describing convectional fixed-wing aircraft structures and system components. You
are to select two aircraft that have been operated in Australia (choosing aircraft with different mission
profiles is recommended). For each aircraft select from one of the three following nominated topics:
1. Wing and tailplane structure – including structure of control surfaces, actuator installation,
circuits and operation, and any ancillary components (eg engines), if relevant.
2. Fuselage structures – including cockpit, hatches, doors, or other openings, and any ancillary components (eg engines), if relevant.
3. Undercarriage structures – including struts, braces, actuators, tyres, brakes and fuselage/wing
openings or doors, if relevant.
Aspects to be noted from at least two different fixed-wing aircraft:
• Basic features of layout and/or structure, including arrangement of various components and elements
and showing load paths between major components. Consider where the loads your sub-structure is
subjected to originate from and how the structural composition facilitates efficient transfer of these
loads. [30%]
• Detailed design features, including any information you can find on production processes, joining
details, surface finishes, materials, sizes, and ease of inspection and maintenance. [10%]
• Operational history and comparison of requirements for the two different aircraft considered, noting
points of similarity and points of difference (include at least one aircraft of conventional layout and
metal construction; and at least one manned aircraft). [20%]
