• Your research paper will focus on one particular drug (e.g., Adderall, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, etc.) and include the following: I. A brief history of the drug a. This section might be very short, but how/why was the drug developed? Was it originally used for something else? II. Basic biology of the drug a. This is where you will get to truly demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the course material by describing the drug’s mechanism of action (e.g., the antidepressant drug, Lexapro, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. SSRI’s block the reuptake of serotonin in the presynaptic neuron and allow for more serotonin to be available in the synaptic cleft. This is important because….) b. You might also want to discuss the process of ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination) in this section and talk about the half-life of the drug. III. Uses for the drug a. What is this drug commonly used to treat? IV. Common and serious side effects of the drug a. What are some of the most common and serious side effects that someone should look out for when taking this drug? Then choose ONE of the disorders that is commonly treated by this drug (e.g., Bipolar Disorder if you were discussing lithium; Major Depressive Disorder if you were discussing Prozac; Generalized Anxiety Disorder if you were discussing Lexapro, etc.) I. Describe the typical clinical presentation of the disorder a. Based on the DSM-5, the diagnostic criteria for ADHD includes the following symptoms… b. Also describe what the typical clinical presentation might look like (i.e., how would this person present to us if we were meeting with them? What might others notice about this individual? How does their symptoms impact their daily functioning? etc.) II. Describe/discuss primary, peer-reviewed literature that demonstrates why this particular drug is used for treatment of symptoms for the disorder a. Example: Research suggests that the use of Adderall is highly efficacious and generally well-tolerated for individuals who are diagnosed with ADHD as noted in the research study….
