SPED 620:  The Science of Early Intervention                                                  Spring 2021
Case Study Critique and Reflection Grading Criteria
Students will engage in 2 different case studies of current issues pertaining to early childhood development and intervention which will be presented throughout the semester: family separation and lead poisoning. Students will read/view a variety of different sources (e.g. research articles, newspaper articles, podcasts, videos, etc.) and engage in discussion/activities within a designated class about each topic. Through this experience, students will have the opportunity to evaluate the quality of scientific information and analyze the connection of scientific research and applications to personal, social or ethical issues in the modern world.
Students will then individually complete a critique and reflection for each case study. The assignment should have these 3 distinct sections, in the following order: Summary of Topic, Critique of Current Scientific Evidence, Application and Reflection.
Students have the option to present their research and analysis in the following ways:

Write a paper (3-4 pages minimum)
Record a video presentation using Flipgrid with accompanying written outline and/or slide deck (5 to 10 min.)
Create a digital informational visual presentation (such as a pamphlet for parents/educators/doctors)

All of the above options should communicate the following information and be graded in the following way:
Summary of Topic                                                                                                                         /5 pts.
●     Provide a brief summary of the environmental risk factor (e.g., the topic): 2 points
●     Explain what the impact is on perinatal and early development: 2 points
●     Describe any treatment or other recommendations: 1 point
Critique of Current Scientific Evidence                                                            /10 pts.
●     Briefly review the current research on the topic; what are the major findings?: 2 points
●     Provide your own analysis of the quality of the existing research; what are the strengths and weaknesses?: 5 points
●     Share your recommendations for future studies; what are the priorities?: 3 points
Application and Reflection                                                                                  /10 pts.
●     Apply the information about the topic to the field of Early Intervention; what is the impact on young children and families?: 4 points
●     Reflect individually on what you’ve learned; what are the personal, social and ethical issues this topic raises for you?: 3 points
●     What are the implications for the field of Early Intervention, policy-makers, global leaders, etc.?: 3 points
Organization and Editing                                                                                                 /5 pts.
Assignments will be written/presented in a professional manner, have a clear structure and format, and be thoroughly edited for grammatical, spelling, and word usage errors. All assignments will be submitted via iLearn, as a file or as a URL link to Flipgrid, the google cloud, etc.
